It was certainly in the 20th century that Croatia witnessed its most difficult periods. In 1963, the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia was created and Croatia was part of it until the dissolution of the Yugoslav Federation on 28th February 1991. Then came a further dramatic period in Croatian history under the rule of Slobodan Milosevic in Serbia. The hostilities continued until 1995, during which the regime of Franjo Tudjman, a leading resistance fighter, then president, took back most of Croatia’s territory. In 1996 Croatia normalised its relations with Serbia, enabled by the Dayton-Paris Agreements (1995). On 1st July 2013 Croatia became the EU’s 28th State.
